Neatness Counts Too

Okay, I’ll admit, maybe I’m not the best person in the world to talk about this, but I think it is important. My father was a stickler for a nice, neat, clean room and I was just the opposite, however, I remember the bad attitude I always had in the beginning but the euphoric feeling I had after the room was clean.

In the classroom, kids naturally will get papers on the floor, paint on their hands, books and folders will be bent and torn. As teachers we have to remember that the setting for learning is just as important as the content itself.

Organizational skills can be taught and should taught right along with the curriculum. There should always be time for kids to sweep, organize their desks, throw away papers and straighten out their folders for homework and worksheets.

The feeling of a clean classroom does wonders for the mind and will help kids learn the value of neatness.

One day, I’ll learn it too…sorry Dad?!

The Fork in the Road

We are at a crucial time in education. It is very exciting but also very scary. We could either make great new strides and reform how kids can learn with so many different opportunities and new methods of teaching, or get swallowed up by the many distractions and over load of information that fills the atmosphere.

Technology, the Internet, Social Media have all changed the world as we know it. We can either take advantage of it to teach our kids or let them follow every trend and popular wave that comes down the river and leave learning up to them.

I believe with the Information Age comes a great opportunity to enhance learning like never before. There are so many ways to capture the kids imagination with technology that I find it hard to know where to start.

I remember being fascinated with going to the planetarium on a field trip, you know, the special room in the dark that showed the Solar System up on the wall, with the very few special effects they had at the time. I can only imagine now watching that same event in 3D on a IMAX screen and really getting a taste of what it really feels like in space.

That’s just a small example of what is really possible these days.

The old model of kids in the classroom all day for six to seven hours may need another look. Lots of kids and students are doing just fine in that setting and there will always be a place for that type of direct instruction, however, I think it may be time for more imagination, creative teaching, educational music programs ,reform and out of the box thinking when it comes to pushing our kids to exciting new heights of learning.

We have a decision to make, which way do we go.

Technology should be used more

Have you ever seen a child or student engaged on the Internet? The concentration and dedication to what they are doing is usually pretty amazing. My kids excitement level on a video game is close to scary. He doesn’t hear anything I am saying or at least acts like it, as his thumbs and hands are twitching on the control console trying to destroy the enemy or opponent on the screen.

In our classrooms we have kids as young as second graders bringing the latest Ipods,Iphones and every little latest gadget that they can find to school. As soon as the teacher turns their head, they sneak it out and try and take a peak.

This generations reality is computers, the internet and social media, as much as my generations reality was the television.

There will always be room in the classroom for chalkboards, worksheets and rulers, however, as we go further into the Information Age, the old style of teaching has got to adapt to the new day thinking.

In my opinion, we are dragging behind the times, again I don’t think we should “throw the baby out with the bath water”, I’m just suggesting we need to intergrate more and more technology in our classrooms.

The good news is, we see it slowly happening with smartboards and laptops in tech labs around the country.

I suggest that these settings be the norm and not the exception.

Let’s catch up to the new reality of the Information Age.

Parents and Teachers: Batman and Robin of Education

The red phone is ringing in the Bat Cave and the Bat spotlight is on over Gotham city. The villian this time is not the Joker, it is illiteracy.

The parent is Batman, the teacher is Robin. Now some would not put them in that order, but that is for a later debate.

Teachers and parents need each other more than ever these days. It has always been important, but it is even more crucial now.

Parents have to remember when they drop off their little darlings, that a teacher will spend six, seven or eight hours a day with them.

They truly see the real side of a child that a parent may never see, as the child let’s their gaurd down and becomes who they truly are.

The main ingredient in the relationship between parent and teacher is -Trust.

The parent has to know they can trust the teacher to do all they can to educate that child, however, the teacher has to know that the parent is going to do all they can to educate and train the child as well, sometimes the latter is what is missing but both have to exist for a students success especially those that may struggle in the classroom.

The bottom line is Batman and Robin need each other to defeat a common enemy…illiteracy.

TO THE BATCAVE!!

Teachers do it all…

I wish we could come up with a new word besides teacher. It is clearly not a big enough word for that profession, lets face it, teachers nowadays are doing at least three jobs at a time, sometimes more than that.

With the breakdown in the family and so many social issues that students bring to the table these days, just sitting at your desk with an apple and some worksheets, excuse my language “ain’t going to cut it”, I’m sorry, “isn’t going to cut it”!

Well, obviously I could use a teacher as I write this post.

Back to the point..teachers are now mentors, brothers, mothers, father figures, role models, counselors and every thing in between, and that’s just sometimes for one student.

I’m just afraid that when people hear the word teacher, they are still thinking of  Helen, on the Andy Griffith Show. That method of teaching may have worked then, but these days you have got to be much more creative in teaching and darn right genius in some classrooms.

The kids come with lack of sleep, malnutrition, anger management issues, broken families, bad neighborhoods and the latest rap song so laced with profanity it would put a sailor to shame.

Whats interesting is that the kids are brighter and smarter than ever, that’s not the problem. It’s the lack of discipline with too many of them that makes things difficult, however, that is what also gives me hope that we can change this around.

If we can harness that brilliance in the right direction, the sky is the limit and the future is bright, but that’s a big IF.

Teachers have to do it all. It has become one of the most under appreciated jobs in society, again because I think the thinking is still in the past.

Teachers have got to more determined than ever, stay after longer, be more creative than ever, do more jobs in one but get compensated as if they are only doing one, tough tough duty!

Let’s support our teachers with higher pay and parental support, more resources like children’s educational music, learning games, learning music, visual aids, teacher recognition and yes, a pat on the back, which is the only thing most of them are looking for.

Discover and Learn Characters: Maria

Our last character that we would like to introduce, is the least representative of a larger point or political statement, she is our little darling “Maria”. She is just a cute character that kids will relate to and love seeing. After all, we are catering to children and sometimes just being a child is enough and that’s “Maria”.

Maria is Hispanic and  that was important to us to have that segment of our community represented positively.

Maria is everyone’s little sister, or at least our other characters see it that way. Although she is cute and little, she also has a huge personality and is not to be taken lightly.

She loves to talk about all kinds of subjects and enjoys telling jokes and giggling. She is an excellent artist, loves playing with her kittens and her favorite food is hot dogs.

With this character we show a great personailty, a great skill and dispel a sterotype with what she deems her favorite food.

When you are searching for music for kids, kids cds and music for young children, look for our upcoming music with this character being featured.

Your kids will love her.

Discover and Learn Characters: Chang

Discover and Learn is introducing a character that does excellent in school, his name is “Chang”.

There are students that are advanced academically and excel in the classroom. We have so much conversation about students that struggle or are not doing well in school, and we should, but let’s not forget to celebrate the students that achieve good grades, make the honor rolls and apply the discipline to their studies that make them star students.

Chang is an interesting character that loves to play harmless practical jokes on his friends. He always receives straight A’s and makes the honor roll consistently. He does well in school but loves to help those who may be struggling and makes it his mission to tutor whenever he can.

He has taken second place three times in a row at the state spelling bee. He loves rap music, chess and his favorite food is pizza.

As you can see, there are a lot of stereotypes abandoned and crushed in his description with what he loves to do.

We did that deliberately to show that people are people no matter what culture and you can’t pin anybody in a corner with predetermined notions.

Also, Chang, as smart as he is, has a challenge. You note he comes in second place at the spelling bee every year instead of first, which means, he can still do better and someone is still smarter than he is or has worked even harder.

So the next time you look for songs for kids, music for young children or learning songs for kids, look up new music coming from us featuring this character.

We absolutely love this character at Discover and Learn because he represents so many aspects in society and makes a point on some issues we care deeply about.

We hope you love him too.

Discover and Learn Characters: Gummie

Gummie is a retired geography teacher. When he was young, he was never able to go outside of his town because his family was very poor. He vowed that one day he would visit every state and capital city in America, over many many years Gummie has done just that!

Gummie is also a blues singer with “Gummie and the Bluebirds”. One day on stage he made up the “States and Capitals Song”. He now sings it all of the time in his old neighborhood and throughout the country to anyone who will listen.

Again, Discover and Learn has introduced a character who is a teacher, with quite a diffrent background and story, also, the love of the United States and patroitism is an underlying subplot along with the love of music.

Gummie is a representation of the diversity of cultures and how one can overcome difficult circumstances with determination ,a plan, and a dream.

You will love the “States and Capitals Song” that Gummie sings. It is a warm and heartfelt, full of fun catchy tune that he explains and introduces to Peter Puzzle when he tells Gummie he is struggling with a test about the subjects.

Look for the States and Capitals song when you search for kids music, learning songs for kids and songs about states and capitals.

You,ll love it for your classroom too.

Discover and Learn Characters: Earth Man (Eian Greenworld)

Our future is at stake and we all seem to be contributing to our demise. Every time we burn lights without any regard to conserving energy ( a real bad habit of mine..but I am getting better) or overusing aerosol spray for whatever reason, and I don’t even want to get into our love affair with fossil fuels and the dumping of plastic everything in our land fields.

Our only hope is to educate the next generation of energy users and pray it is not too late for them.

Discover and Learn has a character that will help our young students and children make an easier transition into the type of thinking that might save our planet, his name..Earth Man!

Not necessarily a super hero as the name might suggest, but will create the environment where heroes can be born.

Earth Man or (Eian Greenworld) is a representation of the earth itself. He is featured briefly on the Solar System Song and CD by Discover and Learn and we have big big plans for him coming soon.

The upcoming projects using Earth Man will educate kids on conservation principles such as:

turning off the lights, recycling paper and plastics, the importance of the earth’s environment, clean air, clean water, picking up garbage from the landscape and emphasizing how beautiful the earth really is when you take the time to appreciate it.

We are so excited about this upcoming and new venture that will feature songs and videos by this fantastic character created by Discover and Learn.

Look for it soon when you search for learning songs, kids music and music about learning.

You won’t be disappointed and your kids will have a cleaner planet one day.

Discover and Learn Characters: Ms.Ericka

Discover and Learn has a character that kids, parents and teachers will love, she is “ Ms. Ericka”.

Ms. Ericka is a school teacher and is sort of the “ mother figure” to the other characters of Discover and Learn. She is their favorite teacher because she is always there to encourage them to do better. She sees her students as “her children” she says.

“She is more like a mother than a teacher” says Peter Puzzle, who is a student that struggles on test but with Ms. Ericka’s help has done much better.

She has two dogs “ Lappy and Happy” that she loves dearly and from time to time brings them to the school for students to enjoy. She also loves to go on vacations and read books.

Ms. Ericka is featured on the Discover and Learn Phonics 1&2 songs. Both have a real nice beat with a catchy tune that displays the basic sounds of letters.

Ms. Ericka is a great representation of teachers all over the country who not only are teachers but are seen as mentors, community leaders, counselors and so much more.

We believe at Discover and Learn that good teachers do not get enough recognition and of course in a lot of cases enough pay, for the hard work and hours put into our young students and children.

So the next time you are looking for phonics music, music with phonics, learning with phonics or phonics songs for kids,

Check out Ms. Ericka.
